My bus buddy's shortcut advice was dead wrong, and I'm glad I ignored it

This guy on the 42 route in Chicago kept telling me to transfer at Fullerton to save time. Said it shaves off 15 minutes easy. I tried it twice last week and both times I waited forever for the connection. Turns out he only takes that route during off-peak hours when the timing lines up. I went back to my old direct route and I'm way calmer, even if it takes the same amount of time. Anyone else get bad transfer tips from regulars?
