Why does everyone call Stan Lee the creator of The Thing?

Saw it again in a YouTube comment thread yesterday. Ben Grimm was Jack Kirby's design, Stan gave him the voice. I checked three old issues from 1961 and Kirby's name is right there in the credits. How do you split that credit when someone draws the whole look?

Take the credit split question seriously because it's a real problem with a clear answer. Jack Kirby drew every panel of those early issues, so the look is unmistakably his, but Stan's dialogue gave Ben Grimm that Brooklyn voice people remember. Honestly, the fairest take is that Kirby created the thing you see and Stan created the thing you hear.
