Did the comic book fan community shift from loving the stories to just chasing variant covers?

I've been collecting since the early 90s and back then fans argued about writing and plots, but now at my local shop in Pittsburgh, every conversation is about which variant cover is going to skyrocket in value - what caused that switch over the last decade?

Man it really hurts to see... I miss when folks would argue for hours about who wrote the best run on Daredevil or something. Now it's all about flipping books for profit.

Oh absolutely, this hits hard. I was at a con last month and overheard two guys arguing over which variant cover would appreciate more in five years, not a single word about the actual story inside. Makes me miss those late night forum threads where someone would write a whole essay about why Frank Miller's Daredevil run changed their life (and then someone else would fire back with a ten paragraph takedown, you know the type).
