TIL I was killing my grinder with one dumb habit and it took a $4 part to fix
I always tapped my portafilter against the edge of the hopper to knock the old grounds loose, you know, quick little bang before every shot. Did it for like a year and never thought twice. Last week my grinder started making this grinding whine on startup and the burrs were clogging every other day, so I opened it up and a chunk of the burr carrier was cracked right where the portafilter had been hitting. The guy at the shop in Royal Oak told me that move puts a sideways load on the gear and it's the number one way people wreck home grinders. I grabbed a rubber tamping mat for $4 and now I knock into that instead. Three weeks in, no whine, no clogs, and my shots are pulling way more even. If you're a tapper, stop doing it into the machine. Where do you all knock your grounds out?
