My uncle's cheap grinder advice made me drink muddy coffee for a month

My uncle Bob, who's been drinking Folgers from a diner for 40 years, told me I was wasting money on a burr grinder. He said any blade grinder works fine if you just shake it while grinding. So I borrowed his old Mr. Coffee blade grinder and tried it with my pour over. Every cup came out bitter and sludgy, with fine powder clogging the filter. After a month of choking down that mud, I finally bought a $45 hand burr grinder. The difference was night and day, smoother taste and no sludge. Has anyone else been led astray by a relative's outdated coffee wisdom?

Blade grinders are uneven, shaking just makes bits smaller, not consistent.
