Tutorial said 20 minutes, took me 6 hours to deploy my first site

Last Sunday I followed a beginner tutorial for putting a static site on Netlify. The video claimed 20 minutes, but I spent 6 hours fighting with Git commands and a typo in my config file. Turns out I was pushing to the wrong branch the whole time, and the error message didn't make sense until I copied it into a search. I finally got it live at 2 AM, but honestly I'm not sure I learned anything useful beyond 'read the docs'. Has anyone else had a deployment that should've been simple turn into a whole day project? What did you do to actually get comfortable with the Git workflow?
