The neighbor who told me to stop overcomplicating my first website

Back when I was learning HTML in 2019 my neighbor Dave kept saying just use a simple template don't try to build everything from scratch. I ignored him for like 8 months and ended up with a mess of broken links and mismatched divs. Finally caved and used a starter template from a free site and my whole portfolio came together in maybe 2 hours. Has anyone else had that moment where you realize the simple route actually teaches you more than the struggle route?
