Warning: the old guy at the shop in Gary told me to cut my feed rate in half on 304 stainless and it worked
I was burning through 3 inserts a shift on 304 stainless last month and a guy named Ray who has been running a lathe since 1989 told me to drop my feed rate by half and add more coolant flow at the nozzle. I tried it on a 60 part run the next day and got through the whole batch on one edge without a single chip out. Now I keep wondering what else I have been running too hot, so has anyone else gotten a tip like that from an old timer that you almost didn't believe?
