That apprentice's question about tool wear changed how I run every job now
Had a kid from the local trade school shadowing me last month in Cleveland. He watched me slow down the spindle on a 4140 job and asked why I was babying it when the book said to push harder. I told him it was about tool wear and he just said, 'But the insert is only 8 bucks, right?' That stopped me cold. I spent the next 45 minutes showing him how one 8 dollar insert can turn into 80 dollars of scrap when it lets go at the wrong moment. We ran the numbers on a 200 piece batch and the math was plain as day. Breaking a $35 end mill on a finish pass costs way more than the time you save rushing. I have been running machines for 14 years and never once did the full cost breakdown like that. Anybody else ever have a green kid ask a stupid simple question that made you rethink your whole setup?
