My old mentor's trick for tool wear, updated with tech

He always said to listen for changes in the cut sound. I now use a basic audio app on my phone to catch early signs. It's like having an extra set of ears.

For real, is this actually a big deal? Using an app for this seems like overkill to me. Most folks can tell from the sound without extra tech. Phones mess up audio all the time with background noise. It just adds another thing that can go wrong. Old school methods work fine without the hassle.

Honestly @angelareed, my phone totally failed last week trying to catch a warbler call. Tbh wind and traffic just broke the recording, so I get the hassle.

Using the Merlin app last month, I correctly spotted a Blackburnian warbler by sound alone. My phone did pick up wind noise, but the app still sorted it out and gave me the right ID. Without it, I would have guessed wrong because the call mixed with city sounds. Sure, experienced folks can tell, but for beginners like me, these tools are a game changer. They cut through the confusion when your ears aren't trained yet.
