PSA: That comment about my compost bin from a neighbor changed everything

My neighbor Gary saw my open pile in the backyard and told me I was basically just feeding rats, not the soil. He showed me his tumbler setup and I finally understood why my compost took 8 months to break down. Has anyone else had a random critique totally shift how they handle their food waste?

My buddy Mark had a neighbor yell over his fence that his leaf pile was basically a mouse hotel... He was real defensive at first but then he actually looked at his pile and yeah, there were little tunnels all through it. So he got one of those wire bin things from the hardware store for like 30 bucks and started layering browns and greens the way the neighbor told him. Took his pile from this soggy mess to actual dark crumbly dirt in about 3 months... Now he swears by that neighbor every time we talk gardening stuff. Funny how a random comment can just click something in your brain.

Three months is pretty quick for a proper pile, did his neighbor give him some kind of secret ratio or was it just the wire bin doing most of the work? @hill.troy I gotta ask if Mark ever found out if that neighbor was a master gardener or just some dude with strong opinions. Ngl I've seen piles sit for a year and still look like wet salad, so that timeline sounds almost too good.
