Our City Council voted down a simple bus lane pilot last Tuesday and I need to know if we can still push back
Last Tuesday I sat through a 3 hour meeting in the Riverside city hall where our council voted 4 to 3 against a 6 month bus lane test on Main Street, mostly because a few business owners said it might hurt parking. What stung is that the city's own traffic report showed the lane would cut 1,200 car trips a day based on a similar project in Boulder. Does anyone here know how to get something like this back on the agenda, or is a failed vote just dead for good?
Main Street died 4 to 3 but that does not mean it's gone for good. In my town we lost a road diet vote 5 to 2 back in 2019, then got it passed 14 months later by getting two council seats flipped in the next election. Your best move right now is figuring out who is up for re-election and whether the two new members might be more open to it. Also ask the city clerk about the rules for bringing a failed item back, some places make you wait a year, some let you do it anytime with a new sponsor. In the meantime, get those business owners who support the lane to show up and speak next time, because the anti side only won by making it look like everyone hated it.
