My neighbor said recycling is pointless because it all goes to the dump, and I can't stop thinking about it

Last week my neighbor told me over the fence that he stopped sorting his recycling because a guy he knows swears it all ends up in the same landfill anyway. I looked it up that night and found out my city's program actually does process most of it, but I still felt dumb for never checking before. How do you all deal with people who use that one excuse to give up on the whole thing?
