I think the local solar farm here in Austin actually made things worse for wildlife

I've been watching this 40-acre solar installation outside of Austin since they built it in 2021. Before it went in, we had a solid population of grassland birds like meadowlarks and bobwhite quail. Now after three years, the ground is completely bare under the panels because of how they manage the vegetation, and I've seen maybe two quail total this spring. Has anyone else noticed similar problems with large solar projects in their area?

You are describing exactly what I have watched happen here in the Texas Panhandle with a different solar project. The bare ground under those panels becomes a heat trap in summer and a muddy mess in winter. Nothing can live there because the soil gets baked and compacted. The companies claim they manage for pollinators, but all I see is gravel and dead dirt. Bobwhite quail need tall grass and weeds to hide from hawks, and they simply cannot survive in a field that is mowed down to nothing. It is a real shame because solar power is a good idea, but the way they are doing it now is just destroying what little native habitat we have left.

Man, that just depresses me, Gavin. But here's a weird angle nobody's talking about - what if the panels are actually making the local weather even worse? I read somewhere that big dark surfaces like that can actually mess with how clouds form and stuff. You get these big heat islands under the panels and it changes the whole microclimate, maybe even making it harder for any seeds to germinate in the first place. So it's not just the gravel, it's the fact that the ground under there is basically a different planet now compared to a few feet away. @gavin_knight39 I wonder if the quail are just giving up on those areas completely, even the edges where there's a little grass, because it's just too hot and weird for them to feel safe. That's the kind of quiet damage that doesn't show up in a company report.
