My old Tinker Toy set from 1987 still outbuilds the new stuff

Last weekend I dug out my actual Tinker Toy bin from my parents attic while helping them clean, and my 8 year old nephew and I built a tower that hit 4 feet before it wobbled. The wooden rods just feel sturdier than the plastic ones they sell now, has anyone else noticed the new sets bend way easier?
