I picked the pogo stick over a bike at age 8 and never second guessed it

Back in 1996 my folks said I could pick one big gift for my birthday. All my friends went for bikes, but I wanted the pogo stick with the fat handlebars and glow in the dark pads. They tried to talk me into a Huffy, said I'd outgrow the pogo in a year. Took me three weeks to get past 10 jumps, but by July I could do 200 straight in my driveway in Columbus. Meanwhile my buddy's bike got stolen off his porch in two months. I still think the pogo was the right call because it forced me to actually learn something instead of just cruising around. Anyone else ever go with the unpopular toy pick and stick with it?
