Brittle bricks beat me, then my kid won the argument

I kept a giant bin of LEGO from the 80s and 90s in my garage in Columbus for over 20 years. Always told myself I'd pass them down to my kid, but honestly I figured they were just dusty plastic. Last Saturday my 9 year old dumped the whole bin on the living room floor and asked me to build the old 6954 Renegade with him. Halfway through, I realized I remembered every single piece placement, where the stickers went, even how the gear mechanism fit together. But then the yellow bricks were all brittle and three of them cracked right in my hands. I went online and found replacement bricks from a seller in Texas for about $12, and rebuilding it with fresh pieces felt wrong at first. Turns out the fun wasn't the original parts, it was the hour of me and my son arguing over which direction the cockpit door swings. Has anyone else had old sets fall apart and had to make peace with using non-original pieces just to keep the build alive?
