Why does nobody admit that picking a checkout line is 90% luck?
I stood at register 4 at the Kroger on Elm Street last Tuesday and had to pick between the lane with the mom and a full cart or the guy with 3 items and a lottery ticket. I picked the 3 item guy and he spent 6 minutes picking scratch offs while the mom cleared out in half that time. Honestly I think the cart size tells you more than the item count, but maybe I'm just bitter. Does anyone actually have a system that works or are we all just guessing?
The thing about "cart size tells you more than item count" is that you're half right. A full cart means a long scan, but a near empty cart often means the person is gonna chat with the cashier or dig for coupons. I look at the people, not the stuff. If someone is already holding their card or cash, they're ready. If they're on the phone or staring at the candy rack, they're not. Coupon binder people are the worst, I've switched lanes over that and taken the loss. Also watch how many people are ahead of them, since one slow person beats three quick ones every time.
