My fridge died quietly in a Target parking lot, now I trust my ears first

Last Wednesday I loaded 3 bags of cold stuff into my car and the compressor just stopped humming. I didn't notice until I got home and the milk was already warm, 47 degrees by my kitchen thermometer. Now I wait an extra 5 minutes in the lot with the engine off, just listening for that faint buzz before I even head home. Has anyone else had a major appliance give zero warning like that, or am I just cursed with quiet failures?
