Just realized I used to know every cashier at my Kroger by name and now I don't even look up from my phone
Back in 2016 I lived walking distance from a Kroger in Louisville and went there almost daily, so I knew the guy who ran the self scan got a new puppy and the lady on register 4 was doing night classes. Now I stand in line like everyone else and just stare at my phone or the little candy rack by the belt. Nothing bad happened, the store didn't close, I just moved across town and my trips got bigger and rarer and the whole thing turned into a chore instead of a chat. Last Tuesday I waited behind a guy buying 47 dollars of stuff with zero eye contact and I caught myself doing the same thing. It's not that I miss bagging my own groceries, I miss knowing who's ringing them up. Is there something specific you used to know about your regular store that vanished, or is it just me?
I miss knowing who was ringing them up too, but for me it was the lady at the gas station by my old apartment. She kept a little notebook of which lotto tickets hit and would tell me not to waste my money on the scratch-offs that never won. Ran into her two years later at a different store across town and she still remembered my dog's name. That kind of thing only comes from seeing the same faces over and over, and big once-a-week trips just don't build it.
