Counting items in my head beats any self checkout scanner

Standing in line last Tuesday at the Kroger on 5th, I realized my phone was dead and I couldn't zone out. So I started counting the items in people's carts ahead of me, adding them up as they unloaded. Turns out the express lane limit is 15, but I caught two folks with 18 and 21, and the cashier never even blinked. Now I do it every visit, it's like a free brain puzzle that makes the wait fly by. Anyone else got a weird mental game they play in line to pass the time?
