Rant: a guy in the Mission told me to skip the $9 burrito and get the $4 torta instead
So about three weeks ago I was in San Francisco for work and killing time near 24th St. I ducked into a taqueria I'd never tried and almost ordered the $9.50 carne asada burrito when this older guy in line behind me goes, 'Get the torta, it's $4 and twice the food.' I figured he was just a regular looking to mess with an out of towner, but he was dead serious so I switched my order. The thing came out on a toasted roll with avocado, jalapenos, and a pile of grilled pork that spilled off the plate, and I could barely finish half of it. I ended up eating the rest cold that night in my hotel room, so that $4 fed me two meals. Meanwhile my coworker paid $11 for a burrito down the street that was mostly rice. Now I'm wondering what other cheap spots I've been walking past because I just assume the pricier item is the safer bet. Has anyone else had a stranger at a counter point them to the better deal? I want to know which spots around your city have a hidden cheap item nobody orders.
