I used to chase the $5 lunch special, now I just want one place that's good all week
For like two years I was the guy with a spreadsheet of lunch deals around my neighborhood in Chicago. Monday was the $4.99 chicken bowl spot on Lawrence, Tuesday was cheap tacos, Wednesday was the place with the $5.50 gyro, and I would literally walk 20 minutes each way to save maybe two bucks. Then my office moved six blocks and I lost easy access to half of those spots, and I had to admit the whole routine was eating my actual lunch break. A coworker pointed out I was spending $25 a week on gas and bus fare chasing deals that saved me $15 total, which was a math problem I did not want to look at. So now I just hit the same taqueria near work four days a week, $7.50 with a drink, and I know the guy behind the counter by name. The food is honestly better than half the deals I used to sprint for, and I get to actually sit down. Curious if anyone else here dropped the deal hunt and just picked one spot, or do you still think the thrill of finding that $3.99 plate is worth the running around?
