Swore by paper maps for 20 years, Google Maps proved me wrong in an hour

My buddy in Nashville made me ditch the atlas on a road trip last month, said I was being stubborn about the whole thing... he pulled up live traffic and rerouted us around a 40 minute backup on I-40. Now I'm wondering if I was just romanticizing the old way, has anyone else flipped on this after a real world test?

Paper maps never showed you the backup before you hit it, that's the whole thing. Your buddy wasn't smarter, he just had a tool that sees ten miles down the road while you're staring at a folded piece of paper. I still keep a road atlas in the trunk for when the phone dies or the signal drops, but pretending it's better is just nostalgia talking. Live traffic is the difference between arriving mad and arriving bored, and honestly bored wins every time. The romantic version of map reading is nice for a Sunday drive, not for a Tuesday deadline. Flip away, you're not losing anything real.
