Switched to synthetic oil in my truck after the 5W-20 jug ran out, and I was wrong to wait this long
I always ran regular dino oil in my 2008 Silverado because my dad swore synthetic was a waste of cash, and I believed him for years. Last October I was doing a change in my driveway in South Bend and realized I was one quart short, so I grabbed a jug of full synthetic at the parts shop down the street just to finish it up. I figured I would go back to the cheap stuff next time, but over the next 4,000 miles the truck started quieter on cold mornings and my gas mileage went from about 15 to 16.5 on my work commute. At my next change I pulled the drain plug and the old oil came out way cleaner, no sludge, no grit, and I just stood there feeling dumb about every cheap jug I had poured in before. My dad is still not buying it, he says it is marketing, but his truck burns a quart every thousand miles and mine does not. Has anyone actually seen a motor last longer on synthetic or is it all just seat of the pants stuff?
