A customer's comment made me measure crown molding differently

Last month in a kitchen reno, a homeowner watched me cut crown and said 'you just eyeball the spring angle?' Got me rechecking my setup, now I use a bevel gauge on the wall before every run. Anyone else had a client's casual question expose a shortcut you'd been leaning on?
