The 'just pick a lane' advice that nearly lost me a promotion
During my annual review last March in the Denver office, my manager told me to stop volunteering for every cross-team project, said it looked unfocused, and I panicked, so I dropped two side tasks overnight to look more committed. Three weeks later, the main project I stayed on got delayed by our vendor, and the side work I ditched was the exact thing the VP asked about in the next status call, so I looked lazy instead of scattered. Should I have pushed back on the narrowing advice or is 'pick a lane' always the safer play?
