Picking a job based on my mom's shop stories paid off

I've seen a bunch of friends brush off family career advice as useless old talk. But when I was deciding between two places to hire me, my mom shared stories from her time in retail. She pointed out that how coworkers treat each other says a lot about the job. At one spot, people kept cutting each other down during the visit, but at the other, they helped each other out. I went with the helpful team and it's been a solid fit. My younger sibling just did what our dad said and jumped into a trade he didn't like, so now he's stuck. Family input can be a good guide or a bad push, depending on your own head. Maybe we could swap tips on sifting through what relatives say without losing our own path.

That part about coworker treatment really shows the whole company culture. It's wild how those small interactions predict if a place will grind you down or let you grow.

Sounds like your mom knew what mattered. Family advice from real experience usually hits different.

You ever get advice from your mom that just completely missed the mark? Mine told me to be friends with everyone at work, but then I got stuck organizing every birthday party for a decade. Guess I showed too much team spirit.
