Overheard a recruiter say they filter out gaps over 6 months, is that real?

I was at a coffee shop last Tuesday and two recruiters were talking at the table next to me. One of them said their software automatically drops any resume with a work gap longer than 6 months. The other one laughed and said they do the same. I took a 7 month break in 2023 to help my mom after surgery, and now I'm wondering if my applications are just going into a void. I've sent out 40 resumes since January and got 2 callbacks. Has anyone else dealt with this? Do I need to explain the gap on the resume itself or just wait for the interview?
