I burned $275 on a 'discount' broker in Miami and my truck sat for 19 days
I want to warn everyone about the cheap online brokers who quote you a low price and then hand your car to whoever bids lowest. I booked a broker out of Miami in March for $275 down on a move from Tampa to Atlanta, and the guy promised pickup within 3 days. Nobody showed for 19 days. When a carrier finally called, he wanted $350 more in cash before he would load the truck, and my deposit was gone because the broker said it was non refundable. I ended up paying $700 total for a trip that should have cost around $450, plus I lost two days of work waiting around. Has anyone else dealt with a broker who subcontracts and then vanishes, and is it ever worth going straight to the carrier instead?
Man, the real trick is to just call a couple actual carriers directly and ask what they'd charge for your route, because brokers are often just middlemen marking up a price they already know. It's almost never the broker's own trucks, so of course he vanishes once he's got your deposit.
