Unpopular opinion: that $9 foam sleeping pad from Walmart beat my $120 one on a 3 night trip in Moab
I grabbed a cheap blue foam pad as a backup for my kid on a trip to Moab last month because I figured no way a $9 pad does anything next to my inflatable. Slept on it myself the second night when my inflatable got a slow leak, and I woke up with zero hip pain while my buddy on his fancy pad was complaining all morning. Did I just get lucky with the temps, or has anyone else actually ditched their inflatable for closed cell foam?
Went through the same thing a few years back and ended up buying a second foam pad for my wife. The thing people miss is that closed cell foam can't pop, can't leak, and you never wake up with your butt on the cold ground at 3am because a seam gave out. Yeah it's bulky and not as cushy, but a cheap pad plus a decent site pick beats an expensive pad on a bad spot every time. My inflatable still comes on trips where I'm packing small, but for car camping and short hikes the foam wins more often than people want to admit. Next time try doubling it up with a thin inflatable under it if you want the best of both, that combo is stupid comfy.
