Pro tip: I stopped trusting those 'all-in-one' camp stoves after a cold night in the Sawtooths

I used to pack a single bulky unit that promised to boil, fry, and bake, but it failed at 9,000 feet when the piezo igniter got damp. Now I carry a simple gas canister stove and a separate lighter, which hasn't let me down in two full seasons. Anyone have a reliable cold-weather stove they actually swear by?

My own piezo igniter gave up in the Tetons, so I feel your cold, hungry pain.

Hold up, I gotta disagree. Those piezo lighters are a weak link. You should always pack a backup, like a simple ferro rod or even a box of stormproof matches. Relying on one tiny piece of tech in the backcountry is asking for trouble. The old school ways are way more reliable when it gets wet or cold. I learned that lesson the hard way on a rainy trip years ago. Now I never head out without a couple ways to make a fire.
