Is the weight savings worth losing a proper rain fly when hiking the Smokies in April?

I was out on the AT near Clingmans Dome last week and watched a guy with one of those poncho-tent hybrids get soaked during a 20 minute downpour while my buddy's old 4 pound tent stayed bone dry, so which side do you land on when the forecast calls for showers every single afternoon?
