I finally tried that 'use a carabiner for your water bottle' tip on a hike near Bend.

It slipped off my pack three times before lunch, so I learned that not all gear hacks are created equal. Anyone have a better way to keep a Nalgene from bouncing around on a scramble?

Honestly, that carabiner trick is a total trap. Tried it once and spent more time picking my bottle up off the trail than actually hiking. Rosed32 is right about them being fancy keychains, they just don't lock stuff down. What finally worked for me was using a simple strap with a buckle, the kind that comes on some packs. You just loop it through the Nalgene's top and cinch it tight to a side molle webbing. Zero bounce, even when you're crawling over rocks.

Throw a small piece of cord or a shock cord through that Nalgene loop and clip it to your pack strap for even faster access with no bounce. Works way better than any carabiner setup I ever tried.

Classic, carabiners are basically just fancy keychains. Maybe try a side pocket or just shove it in your pack.
