A guy at REI talked me out of the expensive sleeping pad and he was right
So 2 months ago I walked into the REI in Sacramento dead set on buying a $220 pad because every review site says you need an R-value of 5 or higher for cold ground. This older guy who worked there asked where I camp and I said mostly the Sierra foothills in summer and fall, nothing crazy. He said the $80 pad with an R-value of 3.2 would be plenty for me and I honestly thought he was just trying to push cheaper gear. I bought it anyway because I figured he knew the local spots better than some gear blog. Used it 6 nights so far, including one trip near Truckee where it got down to about 38 degrees, and I slept fine every time. My buddy brought his fancy pad and honestly could not tell the difference in warmth, though his packs down smaller which is a real plus. I guess my takeaway is that R-value charts assume you sleep colder than you actually do. Anyone else get talked into cheaper gear by a store employee and end up happy with it?
