Overheard a guy at the camera swap say shutter count is overrated

I used to obsess over shutter counts when buying used cameras. But this older repair guy in Portland was talking to someone about a Nikon D7000 with 150k clicks that still worked perfectly. He said most shutters die from sitting around, not from use. Made me realize I was being dumb about it. Anyone else stopped caring about shutter count after a certain point?

Funny enough that Portland guy might be onto something. Had a buddy who bought a Canon Rebel that sat in a closet for like 6 years. Shutter count was under 2k. Took it out for a wedding gig and the shutter locked up after like 50 frames. The mirror box was all crusty from lack of use. My old D7000 with 120k clicks still runs like a champ though. Use keeps things moving and lubed up. Sitting around is worse than shooting.

I mean is "crusty mirror box" really a thing or did your buddy just get unlucky with a dud? How do we know it wasn't just a cheap camera that was gonna break anyway?
