Appreciation post: I was cleaning shutter blades with a solvent for years before a guy in Portland showed me a dry brush method

He said the solvent was leaving a tiny film that caused drag, and after switching, my repair time on a basic SLR dropped from 45 minutes to 20. Anyone else have a 'why didn't I know this sooner' trick for mechanical parts?

My old boss swore by using lighter fluid on sticky camera gears. I thought he was crazy until I tried it on a jammed Nikon FM2. The fluid evaporated clean in seconds, no oily mess. I wasted so much time before that with rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs.

Honestly I used a drop of sewing machine oil on my Pentax K1000 and it's been fine for years. Lighter fluid just seems like a harsh chemical fix for something that might need a gentler touch.
