Old timer in New Hampshire told me to stop sanding between coats of lacquer

I thought he was crazy but tried it on a kitchen job last month and got a smoother finish with less time. Has anyone else ditched the sanding step on high gloss jobs?

So did he tell you why skipping the sanding works, like some chemical bonding thing or just his experience over the years? I've always been paranoid about getting that "orange peel" texture if I skip sanding, especially on a high gloss kitchen where any flaw shows like a sore thumb. But if the lacquer is still a little warm from the previous coat or you're using a slower drying thinner, maybe it just melts in without needing the grit. Were you wiping down with tack cloth before each coat, or just blowing it off with air? I'm curious if it only works with specific lacquer brands or if it's more about the weather conditions in that shop.

A buddy of mine tried skipping sanding once and ended up with a finish that looked like a gravel road.
