Tried Airbnb against a hostel in Barcelona for 4 nights and the hostel blew it away on both price and social value.

The Airbnb cost me $280 for a tiny room with a shared bathroom 20 minutes from the center, while the hostel was $120 for a bunk with free breakfast and a rooftop bar where I met three people to split tapas with, so has anyone else found hostels actually beat private rentals in pricier cities?

$280 for a shared bathroom 20 minutes out is wild, honestly I think you're overthinking it though, hostels have always been the move for solo travelers who actually want to meet people.

Does the social part just depend on the hostel though? I had a totally different experience in Lisbon where the Airbnb ended up being cheaper because the hostel was running some weird event surcharge. @kevin218 is probably right that hostels are generally the move for solo travelers, but last year I booked a private room in a hostel in Rome that cost more than a hotel on the edge of town, so your mileage may vary a ton depending on timing. The tapas splitting thing sounds awesome though, I never get that lucky with strangers usually they just ask for a charger and leave.
