That "budget" flight booking site cost me $150 extra last month

I booked a flight to Austin through one of those cheap aggregator sites thinking I saved $40. Turns out they didn't include seat selection or a carry-on in the price, so I got hit with fees at the gate. Total ended up being $150 more than booking direct through the airline. Has anyone else gotten burned by these sites or found one that actually works?

Honestly though, is reading every single line of fine print really that big of a deal? I mean yeah you should skim it, but it's easy to miss one random sentence buried in a paragraph. Most people just want to get through the signup process without spending 20 minutes on legal jargon.
