Hotel breakfast buffets are a trap on a budget trip

I keep seeing people rave about booking hotels with free breakfast to save money, but I think they're missing the bigger picture. Last month in Portland I stayed at a place with a $15 per night higher rate because of the included breakfast, and the food was cold eggs and stale pastries. Meanwhile I walked two blocks to a bakery and spent $4 on a fresh croissant and coffee each morning. Has anyone else done the math on this and found a better workaround?

That's the move. Cheap bakery breakfast beats hotel buffets every time.

You ever try scoping out a local joint the night before so you can just roll in at 7am when they open? Idk, saves me from hangry decisions every time.
