Hostel private rooms beat cheap hotels for me, here's why

I used to avoid hostels entirely because I thought they were all noisy dorms with bunk beds. Last month I booked a private room at a hostel in Lisbon for $32 a night, while the cheapest hotel near the city center was $78. The hostel had a shared kitchen, free breakfast, and a rooftop hangout where I met three other travelers who gave me tips on cheap day trips. The room was small but clean, and I saved enough to spend an extra day in Sintra. Has anyone else swapped budget hotels for hostel privates? I'm wondering if this holds up in other cities like Bangkok or Mexico City.

It's funny how once you break out of that mindset, you start seeing the same pattern everywhere, like people who finally try store brand stuff or a different grocery store and realize they've been overpaying for years just out of habit. The shared spaces are the real kicker too, you get way more bang for your buck with the people and the vibe, not just the bed.
