Had to choose between a cheap hostel in Prague or a nicer one 20 minutes away. Picked the cheap one and it worked out better than I thought.

My first trip to Berlin I spent way too much on a central hotel. After a few trips getting cheaper places further out, I realized the extra walk or train ride is part of the fun, you see more of the real city. Totally changed how I book stuff now, I always look a bit outside the main area. The money saved goes to way better food and drinks anyway lol.

Yeah, the "real city" part is a bit off. Those central areas are just as real, they're just packed with tourists. Staying further out you see more daily life, sure, but calling it more real feels like a dig at people who live and work in the center. The money saving tip is solid though, I just think the fun is in mixing both areas, not ranking them.
