Used to grab that store stuff every time thinking it was fine. Then I had a friend's homemade version with fresh basil and real olive oil. The cheap one tastes like soggy noodles and that weird sweet dressing now. Totally ruined it for me. I just skip it unless I know who made it.

That weird sweet dressing you mentioned is exactly what ruins the store bought kind for me. Once you taste the fresh basil and good olive oil in a homemade version, the contrast is shocking. The problem with the bottled stuff is how it overpowers everything with sugar and a fake tang. Making your own lets the real flavors come through, and it's not even hard to do. I completely understand why your friend's recipe changed the standard.
