Serious question, did the dollar store spice rack actually save anyone money or just me
I bought into the whole dollar store spice thing last spring and dropped $22 on 14 little jars at the one on Franklin Ave. Six weeks later most of them tasted like dust and I was back buying the $4 jars at the regular store anyway, so I burned about $30 total to learn nothing. The cumin was the worst one, it smelled like sawdust right out of the gate. Anyone found a store brand that actually holds up past a month or two?
Ha, I read a spice shop owner's blog post about this once and she said the dollar store stuff sits in warehouses way longer before it even hits the shelf. That's why the cumin was already dead on arrival. The cheap jars are also smaller, so you're paying more per ounce than you'd think. I've had better luck with the big bags from the Indian grocery, they turn over fast so it's actually fresh.
