PSA: that 5 pound bag of rice went rancid on me after 8 months
I bought a big bag of brown rice back in March for $7 at the Grocery Outlet in Tacoma, thought I was being smart, and just opened it to make dinner and it had that sour, oily smell. Turns out brown rice goes bad way faster than white rice because of the oils in it, and I had no idea. Has anyone else had this happen with bulk grains, or do you stick to white rice for long term storage?

Oh my god, same thing happened to me last year with a bag of brown rice from Costco. I was so mad because I bought the huge bag thinking I was saving money, and it took me forever to get through it. By the time I opened it, it smelled like old paint and weird crayons, I swear. I literally dumped the whole thing in the compost bin and felt so wasteful. I had no clue brown rice had natural oils that go bad, I always thought rice was just rice. Now I only buy white rice for my pantry stash, and if I want brown rice I just get the small instant packets from the store when I actually want to eat it.

Man, that sour crayon smell is exactly what hit me last winter with a 10 pound bag I got on sale. My wife walked in and asked if I was trying to make dinner or science experiment. The worst part is I have a tiny kitchen, so that smell lived in there for like a week no matter how much I scrubbed. Now I treat brown rice like a fancy thing I have to eat within a month, otherwise it's basically a very cheap science lesson. White rice and I are back together, and honestly? We're both happier for it.
