That laying pattern trick I doubted for 2 years actually works

My uncle Jim (he's been laying brick since the 80s) kept telling me to stack my corners with a 3/8 offset instead of the standard half-bond. I thought he was just being old-school stubborn, you know? But last month on a patio job in Greenville, I had some thin pavers that kept cracking with the usual pattern. Gave his method a try just to shut him up honestly. The offset spread the load way better and I only lost 2 bricks to cracks instead of like 12. Now I'm wondering what other old-school tips I've been ignoring. Anyone else have a trick they wrote off for years that turned out to be gold?

Man its wild how that stuff works out! I think its like those little life hacks people pass down that seem too simple to matter. Like my buddy always told me to flip my pillowcase inside out before washing it to stop the corners getting all bunched up. I thought he was crazy for years but tried it last month and yeah it actually works perfect. Same with the old trick of adding a splash of vinegar to boiled eggs so they peel easier. Sometimes the old ways just got something to em that modern thinking overlooks because we think we know better.

Cracking a dozen pavers down to two definitely sounds like an improvement, but maybe those thin pavers were just junk to begin with. Hard to say if the offset would matter that much with better materials or on a bigger job. Cool that it worked for you though, even if it's just one data point.
