Rant: thin brick veneer is not real bricklaying and I am tired of pretending it is
I have been laying brick for 31 years, the last 19 of them in and around Toledo, and I keep hearing younger guys say thin brick veneer is the future of the trade. Last month a builder over in Perrysburg asked me to glue up 600 square feet of the stuff on a fireplace wall, and I turned it down flat. A real brick wall has mass, it has a way it dries out, and it carries its own weight, none of which a half inch slice stuck on a panel with adhesive does. I am not saying it looks bad, because some of it looks fine from ten feet, but calling a man who hangs it a bricklayer is like calling a guy with a caulk gun a mason. When that veneer starts popping off in 12 years, there won't be a repairable wall under it, just ruined sheathing. Curious if any of you have been asked to fix failed thin brick yet, and what you found behind it.
