Question about not soaking bricks in summer, is it really needed?

Last July in Phoenix I laid 400 bricks without soaking them and 3 weeks later the mortar joints started cracking. Is soaking really just for old clay brick or does it matter for all of them?

Man that sucks, 400 bricks and then watching the joints crack would drive me up the wall. Phoenix in July is brutal too, that dry heat pulls the water out of the mortar so fast it barely has time to cure right. I made the same mistake with some brick on a wall out back and had hairline cracks show up in a couple weeks. Soaking is not just for old clay brick, any brick that sucks up water fast will steal it from your mortar and cause it to shrink and crack.
