Heads up if you're taking a job down south this season
The local sand mix there is way too coarse for mortar. Had to redo a whole section because it kept crumbling.

Yeah, totally get that. Coarse sand ruins everything. We had to mix in extra cement just to get it to stick once.

The DIY channel's mortar tutorial used coarse sand and it turned out fine. Was the extra cement a fix for a different mistake? Often, people skip the curing time and blame the mix. Coarse sand can stop shrinkage cracks. Why is it always the sand's fault?
